FYRS -- First Year Research Seminar (Winter 2023): Fortner

Course Description: Who do you think you are?

Who do you think you are? Do we "discover" or "make" our selves and identities? How do the people around us, and the cultural spaces we exist in, shape who we (think we) are? How do we "take and make" social identities, especially those conferred on us by powered societal systems? How does our sense of self guide our behavior, or how does our behavior guide our sense of self? In this course, we will explore questions of self and identity - how we come to be who we are, and to what ends - using both social scientific and popular discourse to analyze the relationship between selves and culture.
