Library Student Worker Handbook

Interlibrary Loan Procedure

If a student or faculty member wants a book or article that we don't own or have access to, our library can borrow materials from other libraries.  This system is called Interlibrary Loan or ILL.  Books borrowed from other institutions are put behind the desk for students and faculty to pick up.

When a patron asks for an interlibrary loan item, go to the ILL shelves behind the circulation desk.

  • The items are in alphabetical order by the patron's last name.
  • Have the patron sign the sheet attached to the cover of the item and read them the due date written on the sheet.
  • Place the signed sheet in the ILL slip box on the ILL shelves.
  • For returns, simply place items in the return bin on the ILL shelves.

Note: Items marked “In Library Use Only” do not get checked out.  Keep on ILL shelf, until patrons specifically state they have completed their use of the item(s). Then they can be placed in the return bin.

Interlibrary Loan--Requesting an Item

Sometimes, you will need to assist patrons in requesting items through interlibrary loan.  The directions and a tutorial about this process are below.

  • Go to the library's homepage: https://libguides.transy.edu/home.
  • Scroll to the bottom of the page.
  • Click on "Interlibrary Loan" under the "Quick Links" section.
  • Click on "Request Materials - click here - ILL/Tipasa login."
  • Sign in using your Transy credentials (username and email password).
  • Click on "Create request."
  • Select either "Book," "Journal Article," or "Other."
  • Provide information about the item and patron requesting the item.
  • Click on "Submit request."

Reserves

Books in this collection are ones that professors have placed on reserve for students in their courses. These items can be checked out for as few as 2 hours or as many as 7 days depending on the request of the faculty member. Reserve items can be found on the gray shelves behind the circulation desk and have a maroon "Transylvania University" slip marked as a "Reserve" item.

  • Reserve items are generally organized by professor's last name.
  • Ask the patron who their professor is.
  • Pull the reserved item from the reserve shelves behind the desk.
  • Check out the reserve items in OCLC WMS in the same way that you check out any other item.
  • Note the time due with the patron
